The used car market runs on information gaps. Sellers know everything. Buyers know almost nothing. This guide closes that gap – completely.
India’s used car market is now larger than the new car market – over 5 million units sold per year. It is also one of the easiest places to lose Rs. 50,000–3,00,000 if you don’t know what to look for. Tampered odometers, flood-damaged cars, accident vehicles with repainted panels – far more common than most buyers realize.

Step 1: Set Your Total Budget Including Hidden Costs
Total budget must include: purchase price + RC transfer fee (Rs. 3,000–6,000) + insurance + potential repairs + first service. Most buyers forget the Rs. 15,000–25,000 in administrative costs and get surprised.
Step 2: Where to Search – Ranked by Trust
- Spinny / Cars24 Certified – Inspected, documented, return policy. Higher price, lower risk.
- Maruti True Value / Hyundai H Promise – Manufacturer certified. Reliable history.
- OLX / Individual Sellers – Lowest price, highest risk. Requires thorough personal inspection.
- Local Dealers – Variable quality entirely depends on dealer’s reputation.
Step 3: The Physical Inspection Checklist
- Body panels: Run your hand along every panel – waves or ripples = previous accident repair
- Paint uniformity: View from front to back at low angle in sunlight – shade differences = replaced panel
- Door gaps: All gaps should be uniform and symmetrical – uneven gaps = chassis damage
- Engine bay: New bolts in old threads, fresh paint near welds = accident repair
- Floor mats: Lift them – rust underneath = flood damage
- Spare tyre well: Rust and water stains = another flood damage indicator
- Tyre wear pattern: Uneven wear = misalignment / suspension problems
- Cold start: Smoke, rough idle, ticking sounds = engine problems
Step 4: Verify Odometer and Service History

Average mileage: 8,000–15,000 km per year for private cars. Cross-check displayed mileage against service booklet timestamps. Worn tyres and heavy clutch on a ‘low mileage’ car mean the odometer has been tampered.
Digital Verification: CarDekho or Droom vehicle inspection report – Rs. 700–1,200 – for independent assessment with documented findings.
Step 5: Legal and Financial Verification
- RC details on parivahan.gov.in – confirm owner name matches seller
- Check for loan/hypothecation on RC – get bank NOC if applicable
- Pending challans on parivahan.gov.in – they transfer with vehicle
- Insurance status on iib.gov.in
- Vehicle history check on carInfo or Cars24
Step 6: Payment and Transfer
- Never pay full amount before receiving original RC
- Pay via bank transfer – creates paper trail
- Get Form 29 signed by seller on payment day
- File Form 30 on parivahan.gov.in within 30 days
- Transfer or take new insurance in your name immediately
