BYD is bringing plug-in hybrid technology to India. Up to 998 km combined range. Rs 25–35 lakh bracket. Everything you need to know before the launch.
BYD’s Big Bet: Bringing PHEVs to India
BYD has already established itself in India’s EV market with the Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion 7. But the brand’s biggest global strength — its plug-in hybrid DM (Dual Mode) technology — has so far been absent from India. That is about to change.

BYD has confirmed that its first PHEV for India is coming in 2026, with two strong contenders: the Sealion 6 PHEV and the Atto 2 DM-i. Both have been spotted testing on Indian roads. The government’s import duty structure for PHEVs (lower than full EVs at some price points) makes the timing strategic.
What is a PHEV? (For First-Time Buyers)
A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) combines a petrol engine with a battery pack that can be charged externally. Unlike regular hybrids (like the Honda City Hybrid), PHEVs can run purely on electric power for 50–80 km before the petrol engine kicks in.
- Short daily commute under 50 km: Run purely on electricity (zero fuel cost)
- Long highway drive: Petrol engine takes over — no range anxiety
- Combined range (BYD DM-i): Up to 998 km on a full charge + full fuel tank
- No need for a dedicated home charger — can also charge via a standard 15A socket overnight
Contender 1: BYD Sealion 6 PHEV
- Body type: Mid-size 5-seater SUV — rivals Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Compass territory
- Powertrain: 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol + electric motor (DM-i hybrid system)
- Pure electric range: Approximately 80–100 km on a single charge
- Combined range: 1,000+ km
- Expected price in India: Rs 28–35 lakh ex-showroom
- Features (global spec): 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, ADAS, connected car tech, premium cabin materials
- Rivals in India: Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Meridian, Honda ZR-V (for the hybrid aspect)

Contender 2: BYD Atto 2 DM-i
- Body type: Compact SUV — more accessible price point, competes with Creta / Seltos segment
- Powertrain: 1.5-litre petrol engine + 7.8 kWh or 18 kWh battery pack
- Pure electric range: 70 km (7.8 kWh) or up to 120 km (18 kWh)
- Combined range (larger battery): Up to 998 km
- Expected price: Rs 22–30 lakh — making it the most accessible PHEV in India
- Key advantage: Compact SUV footprint at Rs 22 lakh with EV-level running costs for daily commute
PHEV vs Full EV in India — Which Makes More Sense?
- Full EV wins if: You have home charging, drive under 150 km daily, and there are chargers at your office or regular destinations
- PHEV wins if: You take frequent highway trips, live in a city with limited public charging, or are not ready to commit fully to EV infrastructure
- PHEV wins for: Tier-2/3 cities where fast chargers are scarce but petrol pumps are everywhere
The BYD DM-i PHEV technology is genuinely impressive — it is the world’s most efficient PHEV system (5.9 litres/100km in HEV mode). When it arrives in India, it will fill a massive gap between full EVs and regular hybrids. Watch this space closely.
