Unpaid challans can block your RC renewal, lead to vehicle impoundment, and in some states, trigger driving licence suspension. Here is how to check and clear them in under 10 minutes.
Why Checking Challans Regularly is Important
Electronic challans are issued automatically by camera systems and mailed to the registered address. If your RC address is outdated or you moved without updating it, challans pile up silently. Since 2023, several state transport departments have begun linking challan status to RC renewal – vehicles with unpaid challans above a certain amount cannot renew their RC. Common Challan Offences and Fines in 2026
- Speeding (above limit): Rs. 1,000-2,000 for LMV, Rs. 4,000 for repeat offence
- Red light jumping: Rs. 1,000-5,000 depending on state
- Using mobile phone while driving: Rs. 1,500-5,000
- Driving without seatbelt: Rs. 1,000
- Triple riding on two-wheeler: Rs. 1,000-2,000
- Driving without valid insurance: Rs. 2,000 and vehicle impoundment
- No helmet: Rs. 1,000 and suspension of DL for 3 months

Challenging an Incorrect Challan

On echallan.parivahan.gov.in, select ‘Challan Objection’ and submit your case with supporting documents (sale deed, RC transfer, CCTV alternatives).
