How to Check Car RC Online in India 2026 – 3 Free Methods, No App Required for One

The RC (Registration Certificate) is your vehicle’s most important document. But the physical RC book is not the only way to verify a vehicle’s registration details in India. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways operates the VAHAN database — the national vehicle registry — which you can access for free online to check any vehicle’s complete registration details.

Whether you are buying a used car, checking your own vehicle’s details, verifying that a vehicle’s insurance is valid, or checking if a vehicle is blacklisted — these three methods get you the information in under 2 minutes.

What Information Can You Check?

Method 1 — Parivahan.gov.in Website (No App Needed)

Best for: Desktop users who want the most complete information | Time: Under 2 minutes | Works for: All India vehicles
  • Step 1: Open your browser and go to parivahan.gov.in
  • Step 2: Click on ‘Informational Services’ from the top menu
  • Step 3: Click on ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’
  • Step 4: Enter the vehicle registration number — for example DL01AB1234 — exactly as it appears on the number plate
  • Step 5: Enter the CAPTCHA verification code shown on screen
  • Step 6: Click ‘Vahan Search’ — the full vehicle details appear immediately

The results page shows: owner name, registration date and validity, insurer name and policy validity, fuel type, vehicle class, maker and model, engine and chassis number (partial), fitness certificate validity, and PUC status. This is the most comprehensive free vehicle information available in India.

Important note: If the vehicle was registered before 2010 in some states, the VAHAN database may not have complete records. In that case, contact the RTO directly.

Method 2 — mParivahan Mobile App (Best for Mobile Users)

Best for: Smartphone users | Time: Under 2 minutes | Additional feature: Store your own RC digitally — accepted as valid document
  • Step 1: Download the mParivahan app — available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store — it is free and official (published by NIC, Government of India)
  • Step 2: Open the app — no mandatory registration for basic RC check
  • Step 3: Tap ‘RC’ from the home screen services
  • Step 4: Enter the vehicle registration number and tap ‘Search’
  • Step 5: Vehicle details appear — same information as the website method

Bonus use of mParivahan: You can store your own vehicle’s RC, DL, and insurance in the app. A digitally stored RC on mParivahan is legally accepted by traffic police in India as a valid document under Section 158(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act — you do not need the physical RC book if it is in the app. This is useful if your physical RC book is lost or at home.

Method 3 — VAHAN SMS Service (No Internet Needed)

Best for: Users without smartphone or internet | Time: Under 5 minutes | Works on any basic mobile phone

This is the simplest method and works without internet or a smartphone. Send an SMS from your mobile phone:

SMS Format: VAHAN <space> [Registration Number] Send to: 7738299899 Example: VAHAN DL01AB1234 Send to: 7738299899

You will receive an SMS reply with the vehicle’s basic registration details — owner name, registration validity, insurance status, and vehicle class. This is the best method for checking a vehicle when you are at a used car lot without reliable internet access.

How to Check If a Used Car Is Blacklisted

Before buying any used car, this is the most important check you can do. A blacklisted vehicle means it has been reported stolen, has an outstanding court order, or has an unpaid traffic violation that prevents transfer.

  • Go to parivahan.gov.in as described in Method 1
  • In the vehicle details results, look for ‘Blacklist Status’
  • Also check ‘NOC Details’ — if a No Objection Certificate has been issued, the previous owner registered the vehicle in another state
  • Check ‘Hypothecation’ — if a bank or NBFC is listed as hypothecator, it means a loan is outstanding against the car and it cannot be legally transferred without the bank’s NOC

Pro tip: When buying a used car, run the registration number through VAHAN before you pay. Check: insurance validity, hypothecation status, blacklist status, and RC validity. This takes 2 minutes and can save you from buying a stolen car or a car with an outstanding loan.

How to Check RC Validity and Renewal

Private cars in India have a 15-year initial RC validity from the date of registration. After 15 years, the RC must be renewed every 5 years. To check your RC validity date:

  • Use Method 1 (Parivahan website) or Method 2 (mParivahan app)
  • In the results, the ‘Registration Valid Upto’ field shows the exact expiry date
  • If your RC expires, renew at your local RTO or through the Parivahan Sewa online portal before the expiry date
  • Driving with an expired RC is a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicles Act — fine up to Rs 5,000 and vehicle impounding
